Wind Generation
Wind Generation Investigation Project (Discussion Papers)
The System Operator is working with the Electricity Commission on the Wind Generation Investigation Project (WGIP).
This project will determine what changes to the Electricity Governance Rules and Regulations (EGRs) and industry arrangements will be necessary to accommodate the connection of large scale wind generation in New Zealand.
The ‘Implications’ phase of the project is an investigation of the impacts of wind generation on the operation of the New Zealand power system and electricity market, for a specified set of wind generation development scenarios. A number of Implication Analyses are available below.

Wind Generation Investment
The Electricity Commission and Transpower recommend that parties considering wind generation investment in New Zealand (whether likely to be grid connected or not) should contact Transpower as soon as possible to discuss connection and/or asset owner obligations.
The nature of the New Zealand power system (small and islanded) means there are technical requirements for wind generation that can be more onerous than those found in the larger interconnected grids of other countries. The electricity governance rules and industry arrangements are currently under review regarding wind generation. Possible changes to performance requirements for wind generating plant and market arrangements may affect the economics of wind generation projects.
Transpower is keen to help interested parties by providing as much information as possible on these issues. We will treat all inquiries and discussions about future connection as confidential.
