2008 National Winter Group
Introduction
The System Operator has convened an industry participant group to establish the likely outlook for winter 2008 on the base assumption that HVDC Pole 1 is not available for winter 2008.
The following three sub groups have been formed as part of the National Winter Group, these all have representation from a cross section of industry participants:
- demand forecasting
- generation availability
- short term mitigation options.
An initial report was completed on 7 December 2007 and updated on 15 Feb 2008. A further update is now available.
Intent of the NWG
The intent of the National Winter Group (NWG) is to:
- develop an agreed industry participant view of likely demand & generation so as to provide a common view on issues and risks for Winter 2008
- identify appropriate measures that could be implemented to mitigate risks.
In developing and updating its outlook for Winter 2008 the group has considered changes to generation availability at New Plymouth and of HVDC Pole 1. The group has also recommended a number of mitigations, five of these have been implemented to help the power system meet the winter peak.
In March the work of the group moved into an operational phase.
